I have used a good Number of guns from a 30/30 bolt to a 8mm mouser old army rifle and two date i use a 7mm mag . I think any or most center fire rifle will take out Big game deer so it depends on the range your shooting . I also shoot a black powder gun TC.. CVA Cap style it is a 50 cal and I use pryrodex with TM hunter self casted bullets I have also used sabots .

I collect single shots and lever actions so Ive got a few that arent ever used also. Main guns that see service every year are Winchester 1300 12ga for deer, my custom .50 percussion Penn/Kentucky Po boy my wife had made for me, Mossberg 500 20ga as backup/loaner deergun and switched out for squirrels, H&R topper 20ga single shot, Ted Williams .22 single shot(deadly accurate), Savage and Mossberg semi auto.22's, Marlin bolt action .22 mag, several flintlock muskets, Navy .32 cap and ball reproduction(squirrels), SKS for yotes and a couple of various caliber H&R/N.E.F. Handirifles(mainly varmints, fox and yote). Ive got several surplus rifles and carbines also and a few see some yote/varmint hunting but most are for plinking. Mausers are one of my favorites but for overall ruggedness the Russian/comblock surplus is good. Swiss K-31 I really like but the straight pull bolt takes a little getting used to.

I would say the gun I have that is most fun to pull the trigger on is my 8mm-06. My Traditions inline 50 cal would be second. For birds I normally grap the Smith & Wesson Mod 3000 pump.

.25-20 was a popular varmint/deer gun in the lever action models in its day. Gramps had a nice collection of old guns. Winchester .32 Special of his was one of my favorites.

Nice older caliber that'll still get the job done. Little more umph then the .30-30. The family use to hunt Missouri and northern tier of states for deer and sometimes black bear. The .32 Special will cleanly kill either. About half the rifles that went with them were older caliber ie: .32's, .38-55, .25-35(?) few .30-30's and surplus military rifles. I seen Gramps take a nice 6pt in Michigan with a Mauser he brought back from WW1.
